FAQ

WHAT IS HANDBLOCK PRINTING?

Handblock printing is one of India’s traditional textile printing techniques, where skilled artisans use carefully carved wooden blocks to create designs on fabric by hand. Each block is dipped in colour and pressed onto the fabric manually, impression by impression, to build the complete pattern. Unlike machine printing, every stage depends on the artisan’s skill, hand pressure, alignment and craftsmanship.

Traditional Indian handblock printing is especially celebrated for its connection with natural materials and traditional dyeing practices. Depending on the printing process, colours can be prepared using naturally derived materials such as flowers, plants, leaves, roots, bark and other botanical sources. These traditional colours and processes give handcrafted textiles their distinctive depth, softness and character.

No two handblock-printed pieces can ever be perfectly identical. Slight differences in print placement, alignment, colour intensity, texture and motifs are natural results of the human hand. These variations are not manufacturing faults; they are part of what makes a handcrafted textile unique and authentic.

Bagru and other traditional Indian printing traditions have gained recognition well beyond their place of origin and are appreciated by textile enthusiasts, designers, boutiques and customers in India and international markets. Handcrafted Indian textiles continue to have strong demand because they combine cultural heritage, skilled craftsmanship and contemporary fashion.

When traditional natural dyes and properly processed textile colours are used, they can offer a comfortable and skin-friendly textile experience. However, individual sensitivity can vary, so customers with known sensitivities should always check the specific product information before use.

At ZIARA CLOTHING, we celebrate this human touch. Every handcrafted textile tells a story of the artisan, the wooden block, the fabric and the traditional techniques behind it. The small imperfections and natural variations are part of the beauty—not something to be hidden.

Are variations in handcrafted prints normal?

Yes. Slight variations are completely normal in handcrafted textiles. Since each design is printed manually using wooden blocks, every impression depends on the artisan’s hand pressure, placement and the fabric’s natural texture. Minor differences in print alignment, colour intensity, motif placement and texture may therefore occur from one piece to another. These variations are a natural characteristic of authentic handblock printing and should not be considered defects. They are part of the individuality and handcrafted character of each ZIARA textile.
